Are you in sales just for money, or something else?

To me it is the freedom and the ability to pick and choose when I work my hardest. I mean that in the most strategic way. Money is always somewhat a factor as well.

I’ve been in outside sales with a payroll company for over 3 years. Previously I worked at a copier company In outside sales for about a year.

My primary job is to bring on new payroll clients and take business away from competitors - business development role with zip codes listed to me.

From a freedom standpoint, you have the flexibility to do what you want when you want. I am my own small business, so in essence I control and make my entire schedule.

From a strategy standpoint, 60% of my yearly quota falls within a 4-5 month span or busy season. If I work 2-3 times as hard during that span (B2B transactional sales job) I could still have a fantastic year and maintain a favorable schedule when needed.

That being said, money is always a factor. Anyone in sales would be lying if they didn’t say at times the stress levels are a different kind of extreme. That is why sales is such a high turnover industry. It is a burnout showcase.

The stress is different. A mental game that is tough to comprehend because no matter how well you do the number always resets and the expectations always get higher.

Everyone has their “why” but flexibility in a job is huge today, especially in a society where everyone wants everything done yesterday. The ability to work in an industry with a tremendous pace but at the same time enjoy scheduling luxuries are hard to find and a huge draw for me...oh and the money as well.
