With planning and being smart. I FUCKING LOVE it.

My players feel challenged, use items I’ve given out 5 or even 10 sessions ago. This resource attrition that D&D needs to challenge players suddenly become very easy to manage. It’s not 1st edition but travel can become more challenging.

As for the dungeon, well players need to consider risk vs. reward. Proximity of enemies, in running Storm King’s Thunder and when they go to a giant lords stronghold, they’ll have to consider the dangers within. Travel times applied to NPC’s too, so maybe they cleared out a huge chunk of the dungeon doesn’t necessarily mean the dungeon has back up immediately. Maybe there are traps now or other things during their rest.
