Not OP, and sorta tangent- but if they're talking about the artificial shortage of medical doctors and the systemic issues within medical education, I highly recommend reading up about the history of the medical profession.
I totally know how asinine and boring that suggestion sounds(I remember dreading it when I saw it on a prof's syllabus), but man it was actually some really interesting stuff.
Here's a classic read on the topic: The Social Transformation of American Medicine is a book by Paul Starr(this won a Pulitzer!)
