Aretha Franklin’s family found eulogy by Rev. Jasper Williams Jr. ‘distasteful’

At my friend's funeral, the pastor did a similar thing -- talked on and on about how he was born again so he was with god in heaven. Which was more than a little uncomfortable for most of the audience (is audience the right word? That seems wrong) since he was an atheist.

But the funeral isn't for the dead; they're dead. It's for the living. And if his surviving family is comforted by it, what the fuck ever. I've never had a child or younger sibling die, so I wouldn't begrudge them whatever happy story makes it a little easier to bear.

All of his friends went out to eat after, and had a little mini wake. No one is defined by what a pastor (who may or may not have even known the person) after they've died. There's probably not a single person who could stand up and talk about them in a way that resonates with everyone anyway. I mean, just think of the things your mom would say about you, versus your employer, versus your college roommate. They could be completely honest, and you'd still walk away and think you didn't know the person they were talking about.
