I agree the entire system is super stupid. But let me explain the logic.
The IFL tried to implement regular salary pay for fighters. Thus, the fighters started pulling out VERY often. Why get punched in the face for money, when I can just not get punched and make the same amount of money?
To reward showing up, this new league implements this (stupid) point system where you earn team points if you show up. They hope that you'll go to work if you feel the need to not let your team down.
The logical question is "well why don't you pay them to show up? Or why don't you NOT pay them if they are absent?" This solution brings us back to the current status quo system that they're trying to fix, which is show money and potential win money.
That's actually not the real problem. The real problem is they're forcing a team system into a non-team sport. Team sports are FAR more lucrative than individual sports (football, soccer). You get regional loyal fans. The IFL tried to do this, and they failed. That's because this is an individual sport. You might train as a team, but the final product that paying customers see is clearly not region-based teams. Mma fans like certain fighters, and what region they represent is irrelevant.
