Army investigates handout suggesting Trump campaign slogan constitutes ‘covert white supremacy'

It's like people always choose the least flattering interpretation, even if your intentions are clear.

It's human nature to take things personally and imagine all the times they've been in the opposite side of a situation and felt like the reasonable one.

Take any discussion about speeding vs not speeding. Every driver of reasonable experience has been cut off in traffic by someone driving at scary-level reckless speeds. Every driver of reasonable experience has also been penned in going slower than desired by someone who isn't comfortable driving at an appropriate speed for the road, traffic, or conditions.

Yet if you put two very average, very reasonable drivers and put them on the internet to talk about driving pet peeves, they'll both feel unfairly criticized and imagine their opponents as the extremes they hate so much. One will complain about speeders... the other reads this, imagines all those times he wanted to do a reasonable 10 over and couldn't, feels unfairly criticized, imagines the commenter is the guy penning him in unsafely, and responds in a way that makes the commenter imagine the reply came from the 60-over reckless nutjob.

I'm not sure there's much to be done about it. People just need to learn to give each other the benefit of the doubt, not be so self-centered in their perspectives, and accept that others' experiences of the world can be both different and valid. It's a tall order. :\
