Article: Can the world produce enough cobalt for electric vehicles?

I thought it was amusing that they call individual miners "artisanal miners" - which sounds like they are artists produce a specialized form of cobalt.

Since the Model 3 is somewhat distinctive as a car, I have had one person approach me and tell me that my car helped fuel war and death in the Democratic Republic of Congo - I was going to a Sierra Club meeting so maybe I should have anticipated this. And someone else mentioned something similar another time. And since I was caught off guard by being accused of being complicit in the deaths of people in Congo, I did read up that Tesla is trying to improve the situation. The article briefly mentions Tesla but it's worth reiterating that Tesla's cars use NCA (nickel cobalt aluminum) which already use substantially less cobalt than the NCM (nickel cobalt maganese) batteries favored by the rest of the industry. And Elon says here that the Model 3 battery is 3% cobalt and Panasonic and Tesla are working towards a cobalt-free battery. Beyond Tesla Panasonic is providing batteries into Rivian's upcoming truck and these are likely the same NCA 2170 cells that the Model 3 is using.
