Have you ever been there? Have you stood in that place? Because I fucking have. The pictures do not convey the atmosphere. Nothing you can say conveys it. I have walked through that museum, and looked at the pictures of my family, at their belongings, on the other side of glass, and said the prayers my grandmother wanted said for her parents - because my grandmother got all the way to the door and couldn’t bear to go in because all she could remember was when they put her on the kindertransport. I looked after her when she had dementia and woke up frightened that they were breaking the shop windows again. And then I went out to that garden and listened to teenage fucking idiots telling dead Jew jokes.
