Asian in Adelaide

Yes, your shyness, foreign accent, and ethnic look can put you at disadvantage here. This city has the most conservative culture of this officially WASP country so...

But you can turn this around and do it brilliantly!, to do so you have to embrace the australian culture and if you do, people WILL love you especially because you are asian.

If you don't embrace our culture you will become emotionally neglected, which added to your looks and accent will push you on a terrible downward spiral I don't wish my worst enemy (especially in Adelaide)

So, you got it tough, let's face it, but there are things that you can to do to overcome your problem (make your weakness a strength):

-speak like an aussie mate. Learn our words, lose your accent, mingle, you can still do this at 16 I hope.

-You have to learn about our culture, learn about cars, beer and footy to a detail. You have to know this things well. You have to have your favourite car, beer and footy team -this is not negotiable-

-Nobody cares that you are canadian or pommy, tibethian, or whatever. So be prepared to get away with things that may be important o you (hockey, superbowl, canadian niceness, the maple leaf, not swearing in public, etc, etc)

-So, learn about our sports, learn about footy rules, cricket rules. What are the 2 footy teams in Adelaide? Where do they play? have you seen them in action?

-You have to learn what are the things that make us feel good, hint: being nice and saying "sorry" are not

-Learn to take the piss out of people

Looks like you still have time until the end of the year, heck because aussies are like the jehova's witnesses of the world, there is always one or two around! SO, my advice is go reach out for the local aussies in your community NOW, surely this 25th they will meet somewhere for ANZAC in your city? there HAS to be a facebook group if you live in a big city. So why don't you mingle with them? learn to talk like them? In fact it would be awesome if you play some footy with them, so when you come you already now the rules and play so you can make new friends more easily.

so as I said before, if you want to be successful you really have to embrace our culture, be better at being aussie than the aussies! There are asians already that do this awesomely, Check the name of this famous asian-australian comedian Poh I think is his name, he's famous, he wrote a book; learn how they speak, and what they laugh at, I think there is also another australian asian lady that has a food tv show, too. they are good examples of how you can beat the australians at their own game so to speak. Ohh and fucking smile all the time, this is mandatory for an asian.

good luck, you will need it. Prepare!
