His behavior is most likely a side effect from growing up poor himself ( i am guessing). Money is more important than people, because its money, not people, that will stave off poverty. Same kind of addiction to money that gamblers have to a slot machine.

My mother is the same way. I remember about 10 or 11 years ago, I had one of the worst headaches of my life. I went to go take a dump and left the TV on (i would never turn it off normally anyway for a bathroom trip). Came out 10 minutes later to my mother angry lecturing me about electricity costs. This was the same day she bought my older brother (the golden child) a brand new G35 (about $30000), so she was trying to be extra tight with money that i waste.

The point is, it's money over people with him. You'll have to deal with it for a few more years. The only advice I can give you is to study goddamn hard and do your best to become financially independent as soon as possible. Then no more bullshit.
