Astronomers discover the fastest-growing black hole ever found. The black hole has an estimated mass of 20 billion Suns and gobbles up another Sun's worth of mass every 2 days. “If we had this monster sitting at the center of our Milky Way galaxy, it would appear 10 times brighter than a Full Moon."

the material orbits the black hole (like a planet would a star)

I just want to make a minor point about this statement. It's absolutely true for the vast majority of the material that comes to be dominated by the black hole, but not for absolutely everything.

There's no special rule for space that everything moves into orbits. If some matter approached a black hole on a vector directly into the black hole, it would not first orbit it -- it would go directly past the event horizon. It's just that the size of that event horizon is very very small in relation to the vastness of the space around it, so such a vector in very unlikely.

It's as if the black hole is a very small target, and most approaching vectors will miss it, and that's when that vector turns into some kind of conic section: a circle, ellipse, parabola, or hyperbola, with the black hole at a focus.
