Atheist (formerly evangelical Christian) looking for a church

Looking for a church is tiring. Mainly because it takes a long time. What is it that you're hoping to find in a church?

The bigger churches tend to do a lot more things that you can get involved in. They have small groups that you can join that are specifically for you and the people like you. They tend to fund volunteer groups that go placesnand you might be able to be a part of it if you want.

Small churches tend to be vastly different. They don't have the money to fund volunteer groups, so most volunteer work would be done locally. They're more likely to remember you and care if you're not there, many small churches have a directory of phone numbers so that people can call you and see if you're okay and if you need anything, but you don't meet a whole lot of people who are very similar to you.

Remember that the purpose of a church is for the community. You could read the Bible and interpret it yourself, you don't need a preacher to do that for you, and you might differ in opinion to every church you go to anyway. So it's really important to find a church that you get along with, because that's the community you're going to want to return to.

Hope this helps.
