Is augmentation really that crucial?

What exactly are you trying to say? Are you saying that in the process of getting Ancients, you will also be getting gear with better rolls? Because the difference between perfectly rolled non-ancient gear and perfectly rolled full ancient + 100 level augment gear is only about 2x more damage.

Here's the little exercise if you want to follow along:

We'll assume for now that your character is invulnerable. That will remove any unnecessary variables, and we can assume that your combat efficiency, mob density, etc. is all the same. You need to do 23 times more damage to clear an 80 over a 60. That's the crux of the issue.

Damage is not mysterious, we know exactly where it comes from. Ancients and augments will improve a Thorns Crusader's damage in exactly two categories, Strength and Thorns. That's it. For all the talk of synergies you made, this is all we get from this gear improvement.

Now look at the difference between a full non-ancient character versus a full ancient, 100 level augments character at a certain Paragon. We'll just say paragon 100 to help your argument (you will need it).

Here's my shitty Invoker. His STR is 10,772 and his thorns with Iron Skin and full stacks is 3,895,781. (Taking away Iron Skin or stacks does not alter the comparison.)

Here's your godly Invoker. His STR is 21,065. His thorns with Iron Skin and full stacks is 4,219,759.

What does your damage look like now? Well, your strength multiplier went from a 10,772% multiplier to a 21,065% multiplier, which increased your damage by 96%. Your thorns went up by 8%. So grand total, your Invoker has 2.1x more damage than mine.

You are still short of your target damage goal by 90%! You have 1/10 of the damage necessary to complete an 80. You are nowhere close to covering the gap of damage that you need.
