It was the rising middle class that really made itself felt in the empire, though, and whose growing wealth and power neutered the British monarchy long before Australia’s founding. Confined to a constitutional formality, the monarchy’s own wealth was further humbled by the stratospheric growth of the middle class’ own instrument of power: the corporation.

No doubt the royal family to some extent gained wealth in paper monies from the shares they held in the various colonial companies, but their relative power shrank as those companies grew.

It’s much harder to point a finger in that direction, though, because … nearly everyone who speaks English is complicit.
