Avatar amnesia: how the world forgot about the biggest film of all time

Seems okay to me that movies with a high gross revenue don't have to be so significant that they're memorable. I don't remember the best ice cream I've ever had, but it was probably pretty great.

Looking at the list of top grossing films of all time, I haven't thought about The Force Awakens or Jurassic World or Furious 7 in years, but they were fine. They accomplished what they showed up to do: getting us from big action set piece to big action set piece. They entertained us.

They're not Rashomon or Dr. Zhivago or City of God, and that's fine because we already have those. We have movies that are important and change culture and will stand the test of time. We also have movies that are action set piece delivery systems that are buttery popcorn for your eyes and ears.
