Average Canadians pay 42.5 per cent of their income in taxes: report - National

In Brazil the worker class has to work almost 5 months of the year worth of taxes.

I guess the real question here is what (if) the population is getting something in return rather than focusing solely on the cost of the taxes. In the case of Brazil, what drives the people nuts (the really small portion that actually sees this) is the fact that all the money goes to politicians pockets because of corruption or conflict of interests.

There are some neighborhoods that are free from paying property taxes, because the government admits not to bring basic infrastructure to justify the tax, and it has been this way for decades. Every four years we hear hundreds of promises to change that and nothing was done to solve this issue.

When paying income tax, everyone that earns more than around R$2.000,00/month has to declare the earnings and expenses of the previous year to the government. A (very) small portion of a family's expenses with health, security and education is refunded because, again, the government acknowledges that it is its duty to deliver these things to the population but does nothing but what I call "band-aid" solutions. (example: easing the way of part of the population into the college through "special slots" for public educated people rather than actually improving the public education)

And yet. Every four years we hear the same shit and absolutely nothing happens.

If you are interested enough to read all this whine (sorry about this) you may want to look for what has been happening in Brazil regarding corruption. What is called "operação lava a jato" (Portuguese for operation fast clean) has been putting away a lot of dirty polititians. In three years this operation has identified over R$40 billion in "wrongfully taken money" (I don't know the English term for this)

All of this to say that it is not always bad to have your money heavily taxed. The real issue, in my opinion, is if it is being used rightfully so.
