Going to defend my friends in news here. Good journalists will not cite the scanner chatter. They will call police and ask for confirmed information. Sometimes, dispatchers will not have much info for some time and will defer to those on the scene or a higher ranking officer. Also, the bigger the story (multiple victims, multiple hospitals, public setting) sometimes police take longer to gather information and then report it. Throw in the fact it’s overnight Saturday, newsrooms aren’t full of much staff, probably similar for police and available supervisors to talk (probably had to get someone that’s on-call). Trust me, it’s not about picking and choosing what is and isn’t news.
