Do you avoid driving and how?

I drive a car if I am not heading downtown (parking price is insane), and when the destination is 10km or farther.

I get a bus most of the time, to get downtown or to places the local bus lines reach. My city has a good bus transport system even being in a third world country. And I get the bus 2 blocks from my home and in 30 minutes I am downtown.

I prefer to walk than use a bike, I already get robbed/stolen twice and they took my bike I left chained. Due to safety reasons (my city is often in the top 50 most violent cities in the world), I prefer to walk than use a bike and get it stolen. Also, just in the recent 4 years they are creating better lanes to cyclists, and those lanes do not reach my neighborhood. 2-4 cyclists deaths a month also do not encourage me to ride that much.

So, I stick to bus most of the times. Car when is far. Walk to everything closer than 5km home.

Car is essential to my fortnight supermarket visit. And car is essential to go to the beach, 120km from here. To get to the other side of the city, 20+km I prefer a car than bus because I need to get 2 or 3 buses, and I end up saving money using gas than the bus system. Also its a 40 minutes ride by car and 2+h by bus. So, in this case, I do prefer car.

I think it is incredible how people here in this sub consider everyone lives in Netherlands or a rich city and everyone can and must use bike everytime.

Due to violence problems, bad infrastructure to cycling, a city that rains 1/3 of the year (don't tell me you love to ride a bike in the rain), high death rate of cyclists, chaotic transit. I do still prefer to use bus as my main choice. cars when really needed, and walk to local purchase and services.
