Awful pacing? Check. Ragecomic themes? Check. Le wrong generation? Check. This is a mess.

Yep! For me it was getting into Beck that did that. He's got dance-y funk stuff, grungey rock stuff, country stuff, hip-hop stuff, even some kinda prog-influenced, long form conceptual stuff, and all of it is great. He gets very deeply into every style he wants to do, and genuinely lives and breathes them for several years- compare that to many pop artists these days who release a basic rock song and then put some cheap synthesisers over it and then people freak out that it's an 80's revival and they're really intelligent and culturally diverse people. When Beck does a new style, it's always something that has been close to his heart for a long time, and he'll take influence from the respected people in the community and his personal favourites, while still maintaining his unique style and being recognisable as a writer. He doesn't just stick a new instrument over an existing song, he becomes part of the culture.

Really teaches you that every sound and style is valid, when done properly and with genuine effort, knowledge, and heart.

I used to not even be that into music, only listening to occasional basic rock stuff, but honestly he was the key for me. Now I have a huge collection of music spanning the last 50 years, I play several instruments, and I'm studying to enter a music university to study music journalism. I listen to rock, metal, pop, indie, alternative, prog, electronic, grunge, and whatever the hell else interests me.

It makes me so mad to see people talking about how "only X is real music" because that's just so stunningly narrow-minded. I honestly think that anyone can enjoy anything if they want to. You don't have to love everything obviously- I have shit tons of music that I've listened to and utterly abhor, but if people are just willing to like something, they can.

Short version, everyone just do whatever the fuck makes you happy, and respect others for doing the same.
