Give us back our snakes!

The analog to a mass kill program for feral cats would be an intensive hunt for invasive Burmese pythons in the Everglades (hint - neither of these will ever work). The equivalent action is not a Lacey Act listing of these animals.

Taking off your shoes or banning peanut butter in public schools is different from outlawing them, or destroying those industries outright. Those are situations where people are mildly inconvenienced in public situations, but otherwise left to their own devices.

Furthermore, this type of "nanny state" thinking is incredibly dangerous. The United States' constitutional foundation is one of limited federal power and sweeping rights. Yes, those things have a long and complicated history. Yes, the federal government has far overstepped its intended bounds in many way. Yes, many people have more rights today than they've ever had in the past. But the thought that this nation is becoming one that removes rights preemptively rather than implementing locally sensible laws, and/or active licensing as I described in a comment below is just sad. What happened to things like innocent until proven guilty? It is far better to punish offenders harshly and allow the responsible to do what they love legally rather than punish the masses for the faults of the few.

And you are just dead wrong. It is not most people who are dumb. I would suggest also that you check out the facts behind the Burmese population in Florida. In contradiction to the rhetoric spewed by HSUS and other parties with ulterior agendas, these animals were not pets released into the wild in acts of malicious intent or wanton stupidity. Has it happened? Sure. But of the 60+ snakes captured a couple years ago, genetic analysis shows a very high degree of familial relation between these animals. It turns out that these animals have been in the Everglades for nearly 23 years. They, or their predecessors, were held in a secure breeding facility that was destroyed during Hurricane Andrew. I'm not sure I see how this is the fault of anyone in particular, besides the fact that humanity exists in Florida to begin with. The study of the same captured specimens also indicated that, contrary to HSUS and other reports, the Burmese pythons are not responsible for the extinction of various small species. Their stomach contents were almost exclusively cotton rats. The real culprits are things like Cuban tree frogs and feral cats. We've fucked Florida up beyond all recognition. Destroying the large snake industry nationwide is a ridiculous and overreaching response to this problem.
