I really don't agree with that idea. Why is it an issue for an American to only speak English? My parents only speak English, but they aren't lesser because of it. My mom is an CRNP and my dad owns a physical therapy business, they're both highly educated but have no reason or desire to speak another language. Why would they need it? They don't know anyone else who cannot speak English and, for the little Spanish they need, they use a web translator.

I speak 3 languages but only because I travel across seas regularly. Recently I was speaking to someone from Norway and he asked if I learned my German from my parents, which I did not. I told him that the rest of my family only spoke English and he said "I'm sorry" in a tone like he pitied them. The guy is nice, and r/memes is probably not the place for me to vent but what the fuck does that even mean? You're sorry because my parents have no need for another language?

My mom isn't going to fucking China or Europe in her spare time, nor does she doesn't want to. So why the fucking hell does it matter if she doesn't speak fluent Croatian?
