Bad neighborhoods; streets to avoid?

First: Check out both the urban and suburban neighborhood guide on /r/ubreddit's wiki page.

All the info you need is there.

Second: Do you have a car?

Buffalo has a decent public transportation system serving the city proper. (service in the suburbs range from great to mediocre).

Honesty, if you want to actually enjoy Buffalo, then I would move into a city neighborhood. UB North Campus is practically an island in suburbia. South Campus though is right at the Northeastern edge of the City Limits. There is a shuttle that connect each campus and is only a 15 minute ride.

UB North

Everything is spread out and UB is pretty isolated from the surrounding neighborhoods by a sea of fields, roads and parking lots. You're going to get bored living here, or annoyed that you have to drive to get anywhere.

UB South

  • To the North is the more dense part of Amherst. Amherst actually ranks consistently among the safest towns in America every year. You can then walk to South an grab a UB Stampede to North.
  • West of Mainstreet is University Heights and is very safe. Lots of shops along Mainstreet.
  • West of University Heights in North Buffalo proper which is an amazing neighborhood. Its pretty quiet and along Hertel there are a ton of great restaurants, cafes, bars and boutiques. There is a bus that can take you to South Campus, or its a 5-15 minute drive to South (30 minutes to North).
  • South of South Campus is the University District (East of Mainstreet). Honestly, a block or two in is not that bad (this can be said for Main Street throughout the city) and access to the Metrorail is nice. More than a few blocks in and that where things really get dicey and you start to encounter some serious gang related crime problems.
  • East of South Campus is a Golf Course and then the very wealthy Lebrun Avenue neighborhood. You cannot afford to live here. However it is visit to visit and see a neighborhoods of well kept mansions right next to a neighborhood full of poverty. Really shows the income disparity of Buffalo well.

Neighborhoods along the Metrorail

The Metrorail ends at UB South and goes 7 miles South to Downtown. Great, since you can conveniently take advantage of a cool things happening around the city.

  • Parkside - Right near the zoo and Delaware Park this is a really charming historic neighborhood and you are just a short drive to Hertel Ave and South Campus alike.
  • Hamlin Park - East of Mainstreet near Canisius College. The neighborhood is well kept and its very safe. Only thing is that there is not much to do in the immediate area.
  • Elmwood Village/Delaware Disctrict - South of Delaware Park. Live around Delaware Ave and you are in a sweet spot between having the Metrorail within walking distance as well as Elmwood Village to the West which is Buffalo's most in demand neighborhood and has a lot of stuff going on.
  • Allentown - (between Elmwood Village and Downtown) Buffalo's bohemian district. Another great area. You are within walking distance of downtown and the Southern portion of Elmwood. Allen Street has a ton of great restaurants and bars to choose from.
