Do you think it is bad that once I know how to play a song I just have it memorised and don’t look at the music?

I’m imagining you to not be an advanced player, given that you asked this here. Please forgive me if I’m incorrect.

So with that said, I’ve had students that get off the page too quickly, and they are not playing it correctly. These are the hardest mistakes to fix because they just keep playing the song the way they feel it, which is not accurate to the score.

With THAT said, you DO want to get off the page at some point. That’s how you go from intermediate to advanced. Music stops being a series of rules - play this note and this note and this note” and emerges as layers of concepts. You do have to go past following the page of rules to bring life to complex music.

So depends on where you’re at.
