Bands with no peers

I disagree that no one has sounded like Meshuggah since Meshuggah. They essentially created the djent subgenre, so I absolutely support the claim that their sound was original and they deserve as much credit as any one band/artist can have for “starting” a genre.

But that genre is jam packed full of dozens upon dozens of successful bands that take very direct inspiration from Meshuggah. The past ten years of progressive metal has been almost entirely dominated by Meshuggah-likes. Super low tuned guitars, incredibly clean and tight production, palm-muting with high gain, super complex rhythms. The main characteristics which make Meshuggah’s sound are found everywhere in the modern metal scene. Animals as Leaders, Tesseract, Born of Osiris, Monuments— all of these bands frequently sound a whole lot like Meshuggah. Then there’s all the bands that have borrowed from the production and rhythmic complexity, but incorporated them more into accessible packages. Bands like Northlane, ERRA, Veil of Maya’s new stuff (their old stuff was a lot closer to normal Meshuggah), Periphery.

Meshuggah is everywhere, they’re arguably the most influential metal band of the last 15 years. They deserve a ton of praise, this isn’t meant to downplay them, but rather to say that their sound is absolutely replicable and many bands have thoroughly demonstrated that for at least a decade now.
