The bank of Mum and Dad: ‘It’s such a huge amount of money. And guilt’

Doctors salaries are incredibly misleading.

What they don't mention, is that being a doctor means that you don't properly leave education for a very, very long time, in some cases, never.

And that comes with costs. 2 of my closest friends are doctors, and I've just had to help one of them out with a not small amount of money because she's working part time to do a masters that advancement in her speciality requires, whilst simultaneously being hit with thousands of pounds of fees to do tests she must pass to continue to be able to do her job.

This is aside from what they pay to the various governing bodies to be able to continue to work, along with purchasing their own working insurance (and god help you if you make even a minor fuck up early on). £50k after first tax and then all these costs, combined with eye watering levels of debt from the extended period between turning 18 and earning any money, can start to look like not a lot of money at all. There is a reason why the majority of Doctors are from solidly middle class, privately educated backgrounds - the cost of establishing a career in the field is incredibly high. Shamefully so, considering how vital these people are to society.
