Barack Obama will headline televised prime-time commencement

This might get buried because I'm way late to the game but as a West Point graduate myself, I just want to clarify a few things real quick:

None of them are at their first duty station -- in fact 100% of them were instructed to return home during their spring break in March. The earliest that any of them will be at their first duty station for BOLC (Basic Officer Leadership Course) is the end of June anyways (can be earlier with an exception, but for 99% this is true).

Second, in order to outprocess from USMA as well as clear their rooms they would have to come back at some point before their first duty station anyways.

Third, when the graduating seniors go back they will be the only ones on campus and they will be appropriately distanced in the barracks, for meals, etc.

Lastly, it's always news around spring time where the President is planning on speaking for graduation, this year just happened to coincide with a pandemic, so the reporting that it "came as a surprise" to West Point is true, yes, but it always was going to be a surprise.

The time and taxpayer money would be spent this way if there wasn't a pandemic and likely would be spent this way regardless of if President Trump spoke even though there is. Last year we had the VP while the President spoke at Air Force.

So with all of that in mind (and now this is just an opinion), I can tell you for certain that I wouldn't trade away the day that I got to throw my hat in the air with 1000 of my closest friends for anything. They were going to have to be back on campus at some point anyways, so why not have a semblance of the graduation ceremony that every other class before them has enjoyed? Speaking to many of my friends who are seniors right now, they agree.

It was the best day of my life.
