Hi, I’m a lawyer. You should absolutely talk to a lawyer before you decide how to move forward. I understand concerns about money, believe me, but you should contact your state bar (check their website!), which will have legal assistance available for free (through a network of attorneys working pro bono). You can also do a google search for legal aid in your area, and there are usually other entities that offer legal aid to people in need. Even most private attorneys will consult with you for free and some will set up payment plans. Please don’t feel like you can’t afford help before pursuing these options!
