You stand on the back, and kick with one leg. You can have a passenger or a backpack on the "chair" bit. You steer it with practice and luck (and pushing the handle on the "outside" of the turn). You have to push it, but when it's icey on the ground it gives you a nice support. Since we're not good with naming things, it's name is "kick-support". Illustrations here and here.
