Types of Belgian Tapestries
There are mainly two types of Belgian Tapestries - Bayeux Tapestries and Beatrix Tapestries. Bayeux Tapestries uphold the medieval style of the Belgian tapestries. Historic moments of the Battle of Hastings are the main themes of these tapestries.
The war scenes are in fact embroidered on the Bayeux tapestries rather than being woven. Therefore, it cannot be technically called a tapestry; yet it is. Bayeux tapestries were adorned in churches as well as the wealthy houses of England. At 1.6 by 224.3 feet, these tapestries are considered exceptionally large. The background, against which the figures and decoration are embroidered, is left absolutely plain, so as to show the subjects very clearly.
