I became homeless after I got out of the Army and decided to walk across America. Alone, unsupported, and with little to money, I traveled from Tennessee to Delaware, to California, to Florida, to Alaska, back to Florida, and back to California again. AMA

For food, I did a lot of hunting, trapping, fishing, and foraging. I even did some dumpster diving while I was passing through towns. It's amazing all the food you can find tossed in the trash behind stores! Occasionally, people would stop and give me food, or even invite me over to their house for dinner.

As far as showering goes, I would bathe in creeks, find water hoses on the side of buildings, take advantage of the rain, wash up in public bathrooms, or sometimes people would invite me into their house just to take a shower as well. There were a couple of times that I stopped at firehouses too! I also stopped at a couple of motels and asked if I could just use the shower if I promised not to dirty up the place. I was usually told to kick rocks lol but a couple of places were cool with it, and sometimes they even had work I could do in exchange for a room for the night.
