Because it's not.

I’m a med student. My school pressured us into asking this when we learned how to take a history. I have never asked a patient about firearms because, like this meme depicts, it’s none of my fucking business. If, after being evaluated on my history taking and my preceptor tells me I forgot to ask, I just act surprised and say I forgot.

Some of my professors have also made off-handed comments about guns in the middle of totally-unrelated lectures. It’d be nice if they kept their politics at home. But instead they choose to indoctrinate the next generation of physicians. God forbid you form your own opinion on a subject. There is a deep culture war being waged against us who support the 2a and other inalienable rights.

Unfortunately, in academia and many professional spheres, you have to pretend to agree with the people around you, just to survive. As you would expect, most of them are left-leaning “liberals.” It’s ironic that the “liberals,” who are supposed to be tolerant by definition, are very intolerant of dissenting opinions. I find myself holding my tongue all the time in this echo chamber.
