Because it's not really about "disrespecting the military" now, is it?

What made you abandon conservatives?

Several reasons

hypocrisy around Christianity

If you actually take the time to read the New Testament, Jesus supports socialism, e.g. “Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”. Not surprisingly, He is also very critical of the rich. Jesus was also a staunch pacifist, e.g. "But I tell you, don't resist him who is evil; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also." All of this squarely goes against the individualistic principles of conservatism of which Ayn Rand's Objectivism is a better representative. Coincidentally, Satanism holds Objectivism as part of their commandments. Maybe that's why the GOP stars are upside down now? https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2008/03/there-satanic-symbolism-gops-logo/

hypocrisy around achieving "small government" and limited fiscal spending

Every time the Republicans gain power, the US Treasury is emptied, spending drastically increases, and the government massively expands in both size and scope. The only winners are the super rich. The creation of Homeland Security was just stupid, when it would have been better to provide more funding to existing security agencies. You cannot have a massive military budget, and still be fiscally conservative. Along those lines, we cannot continue being the World's Police when other countries aren't paying us for the service. On the same note, the budget is magically, semi-sane when establishment Democrats are in power.

hypocrisy surrounding socialism

Conservatives yell and scream when funds are doled out directly to poor citizens. Yet they're silent about farming subsidies, too big to fail bailouts, and general corporate welfare. Those are all variants of socialism that massively eat up our budget, yet there's no complaints about those programs. That's not entirely true. Everyone is still pissed about the 2008 bailouts.

Abortion

On a related note, conservatives are also strongly against abortion, yet they're not willing to provide any support for the new family. They also ignore the fact that abortion has reduced crime over the past few decades https://bfi.uchicago.edu/wp-content/uploads/BFI_WP_201975.pdf

The reliance of faith in stupidity vs trust in science and data

Conservatives consistently attack science and data in a way that just annoys me. COVID-19 is just one of many examples. Maybe it's also the same reason why they don't notice that the budget explodes when the Republicans are in power?

Rigged Republican primaries

There are lots of voting irregularities that favor establishment candidates. Unfair media coverage of non-establishment candidates. As an aside, I don't like Trump, but I gotta give him credit for being able to beat that. It's no small feat. To be fair, it's a lot like the Democrats' primaries.

Efforts to destroy privacy and digital security

It's not a surprise that conservatives are against both privacy and digital security because they don't like science, data, and technology in general. They don't understand that if you reduce security for some then you reduce security for everyone including the government itself.

Racism due to the uneducated masses

Before Trump, Latinos were seen as the future of the conservative movement. It makes sense. (I'm speaking from the perspective of conservative leadership here. To be very clear, I'm just the messenger for the very next sentence.) Latinos are mostly Christian, family oriented, and they're essentially tanned white people who speak Spanish. They are also one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the US. Without Hispanics, the only tools Republicans would have is gerry mandering. Now, the conservative masses by and large view them as vermin which is dangerously insane. I mean how the fuck can anyone, especially Christians, condone putting Hispanic children in cages? (By the same token, I have no clue how many Hispanics stay Republican in the age of Trump.) When I think back, this was the straw that completely broke the camel's back. I was genuinely upset by this, only to be met by apathy and indifference by my own family who still keep appearances by going to church every Sunday. I still love them, but it's fucking disgusting.

And what are you now?

I don't know. I don't neatly fit in any box. I am wary of socialism in general and I'm closest politically to Joe Biden, yet I support Bernie Sanders and universal medicare. I also still strongly support the 2nd amendment. Maybe I'm just a shitty disciple of George Carlin who now constantly torments family and other conservatives by pointing out their BS? TBF I do the same to liberals too. Maybe I'm shitty Libertarian since no one likes me politically?
