It's becoming clear: Michigan State prized image protection far more than the truth

So you're saying use a scalpel not a sledgehammer when confronted with a systemic failure. Fair. The thirst for immediate punishment is strong and understandable.

It's the coaches and ADs, those nearest to players, that are biggest enablers and where this shit has to get rooted out. Coach and player develop a bond and coach's inclination is to protect the player or give him benefit of doubt over Jane Doe. He "deals with it." It's just an extension of the original recruiting pitch. If high school player knows a coach rules honestly and would not shield a player from scrutiny for alleged crimes, well that's bad door business. But if we have accountability (almost) everywhere it levels the playing field.

A lot or coaches maintain deniability by refusing to learn of off the field behavior -- or sex crimes -- which is obviously absurd. Coach delegates to some assistant to put up a wall. Most people dislike regulation or oversight but these coaches or ADs have too much pride, reputation and money at stake to protect all students , not just star student athletes.
