Behold: New Mormonism

The term "New Mormonism" only exists in the heads of those people. But I think there are New Mormons, or what the people who use the term would call "New Mormons," everywhere in the church. New Mormons are pretty much anyone who believes the church is "Good, but not True" and I think there are hundreds of thousands, possibly millions of them that are active in the church.

Consider the words of one Orlando missionary:

  1. I believe the church is a great organization that some people really need to find purpose and happiness.
  2. In order for me to get where I want to go in life the mission was the next step.
  3. The mission has been one of the best experiences of my life and I am glad I am here.
  4. I honestly phase in and out of faith and doubt, I have many unanswered questions, but I also have felt things I can't explain, and seen earthly miracles happen through the church, like the hurricane clean up set up and put into action 48 hours after it hit.

These four points probably help you understand where my stance is at this point as far as the church goes. I don't know what that makes me from an outsiders perspective, but I know that the church has allowed me to improve people's lives, and if this is the only one we got I am ok with that.

This missionary isn't even sure there's an afterlife, but he's still happy to serve a mission because he sees it as a way to improve his life and the lives of others, and he sees really good things happening. He doesn't know what that makes him, but I'm betting Randall Bowen would call it "New Mormonism."
