I think your objection is misplaced because the crew aren't scientists, they're ships engineers, security people, naval officers, etc. The show doesn't depict them doing research science because they're not research scientists.

But, they are constantly doing ground-breaking scientific research, usually in situations where entire planets full of actual scientists have failed. The number of times La Forge and Data invent entirely new physics (in an afternoon) or Crusher or Pulaski find a cure for a disease that has wiped out entire planets make it pretty hard to claim they're not scientists.

Personally, as a working scientist, I much prefer nonsense technobabble to the use of real words in ways that don't make any sense. Heisenberg compensators and chroniton beams might be silly, but they're not wrong. As much as I love Disco, the writers' "pick real words and use them at random" version of technobabble rankles in a way previous shows rarely did. They didn't need to call it "dark matter."
