As Bernie Sanders Pushed for Closer Ties, Soviet Union Spotted Opportunity

A bit of truth exists to this claim. Sanders did travel to the Soviet Union shortly after his wedding in 1988, and Sanders himself has described this trip as a “very strange honeymoon.”

Could very well have been a flippant remark, meant to be amusing. Sounds like it, no? If we had more of what he said, what the situation was, who he was talking to and what they said, we'd know better. Context is everything.

You know, being someplace on business doesn't mean you can't appreciate where you are. Business and pleasure. Russia is an old country, with, I'm sure, some amazing sightseeing opportunities. Tsarist Russia had some beautiful palaces, for example. Here, I googled that for you. I never saw pics before, so thanks for getting me to do that. I heard about the Amber Room on Ripley's Believe it or Not, or something like that.

I knew someone whose family visited the Soviet Union in the early eighties. They were not communists, they had money and liked to travel. Never found out how that came about. I heard about it in passing. Always thought the USSR was pretty closed off at the time.
