Best Beethoven Conductors

Not possible to answer, as there are just too many choices, too many interpretative viewpoints and too many decades of recordings. What is best? Depends on what you are looking for. I for instance don’t touch old recordings and prefer to support living artists. Do I miss out on ‘best’ or better recordings- probably, but it won’t kill me.

So as cycles go, I would list Chailly or Vanska as being well worth listening to, with great playing and modern sound. Are they as great as 1835 Furtwanganini recorded on earwax cylinder - I don’t care. Music interpretation is an evolving and ever changing beast, and I want to hear what todays interpreters are saying about it.
