best foods to eat in sugarland? (from california)

Crazy that no one has mentioned South Asian food (even though Sugar Land has so many good options) but worry not, I shall help!

Pakistani

Ashars Nihari I recommend the Nihari (beef with spicy curry), dhaga kabob (beef kabob thats cooked with string, dont eat the string though lol), and naan (bread).

Royal Restaurant/ Aga's Restaurant These two restaurants aren't in Sugar Land but it's like a 10 minute drive so if you can go, highly recommend. These two are different restaurants in different locations but they're very similar and I'm going to be recommending the same items from both. Personal favorite for me is Royal because its a family fave and its slightly cheaper than Aga's. But Aga's has revamped their business in the last couple years and has risen in popularity. But both restaurants have been around for the last 20-30 years. I recommend goat chops, biryani (rice with meat and potatoes), butter chicken (chicken with mild curry), chicken kharai (chicken with spicy curry) and naan.

Indian

Standard Sweets Not the best place for Indian food in Houston (go to Hillcroft for that), but if you really don't want to leave Sugar Land, this is classic (vegetarian) Indian food thats really yummy. I recommend Pani Puri/Dhai Puri (fried shells with garbanzo beans and other toppings) Pani = water so pani puri is savory, dhai=yougurt so dhai puri is sweet. both fantastic! Saag Paneer with naan (cheese with spinach). Also you can never go wrong with Samosas (fried pastry with potato) or mithai (sweets!) ! (Nirmanz Food Boutique is similar but more fun/restaurant style food. I prefer Standard Sweet because its more home style but both are good!)

Bombay to Beijing This is Indian (non veg) Chinese cuisine. I won't give recommendations because there's not one dish here that everyone gets but its good food!

Dessert

Agha Juice, next door to Ashars. Technically a dessert spot but also South Asian, so worth trying. I recommend Gola Gunda (shaved ice), kulfi (ice cream on a stick), or falooda (milkshake with noodles? haha)

Bonus

Twisted Turban Again, this isn't in Sugar Land but only 10 minutes away. Recommending this because lots of other burger places (like Gurus??) were recommended but I promise this is not like the others. This is Indian Fusion burgers and their Turban Burger is delicious!

Abu Omar This isn't South Asian and its not even a restaurant (food truck) but if you want some good shawarama, this is the place to go. I'm recommending this because I went to Cali and tried out a shawarma place that had like 4 stars and it was really underwhelming (sorry not sorry lol). Anyways recommend Italian Shawarma or Shawarma arabi.

Anyways, I hope this list helps and if you try out something, let me know how you liked it! This stuff is definitely unique to Houston, like you asked! Fort Bend county (aka Sugar Land) is one of the most diverse places in the country so please don't stick to just bbq and American food! Although ofc our bbq is really delicious and there's nothing wrong with American food. But yeah, hope you give something a try! (Also if you do want to venture further into Houston, I have a lot of recommendations on more unique places!)
