Best Way to Find Advisor

I'm curious how do you think advice will help you? In all likelihood, if you are 5 years out you should be able to quite accurately calculate if you are on track for retirement. If you are not on track, I'm not sure if any advice will help you get there. Maybe posting here will net you some free advice from more knowledgeable posters on the sub.

In my own experience, advisors work best if you want them to do something very specific, eg tax avoidance, estate planning, foreign investments, etc. I've used advisors from my brokerage, paid advisors, random 'advisors' from bank (don't use these), etc. and never found general advise to be very helpful.
