But it's GOOD to suppress that info. If your side is ever surprisingly winning, you don't want the other side to know until it is too late. I'm thinking of the... I think 2004 election in WA where a senator and governor were elected and the news started reporting on exit polls before the polls closed. All the sudden they started talking about "wow, two female senators AND a female governor in WA now!" and what do you know, there was a sudden rush to the polls before they closed and those late voters swung more to the opponents (R). The newscasters at the time even said oops. Ultimately wasn't enough to swing the results in that case... but something weeks in advance might be. It is good practice to not release any results until polls close.
