Bevell Debate

How quickly our fans have forgotten that Bevell was the offensive coordinator that got us to TWO superbowls in TWO years.

Not For Long. That's the mantra of successful teams in this game, and it means that even if you attribute all of our offensive success to Bevell, he is far from beyond reproach.

I think more than anything the issue lies in team chemistry. We've made a lot of changes to the team's roster, it will take time for our play-style and execution to manifest itself into successes.

We've seen success already. This game was a high water mark for the offensive line, with adequate run and pass blocking. Fittingly the run game flourished, but the passing game continued to sputter and fail to move consistently. That means we can see Cable's work paying off, while Bevell's responsibility continues to flounder.

Bubble screens when the O-line shits itself... Makes sense to me, and I trust the man that got us to TWO superbowls and won't pretend to think otherwise.

The screens are an extension of the running game. If they are dialed up for Lockett or Baldwin, there's a place for them. Better still, if they start building play fakes off them and opening up the running game, it shows a strategy that can be built upon.

HE DOESN'T DO THAT.

Instead he falls into these ruts where he's relying on the running game to average 5 ypc while poking around in the dark with the passing attack. The defense will start to lean in on the rushing attack on 1st and 2nd down, Russell will drop back for a slow developing pass play and have to settle for an incompletion or sack, and suddenly the defense is right back on the field.

Russell's interception (and a few key incompletions to boot) were to TEs in the middle of the field, right at the marker. The slow Bengal LBs didn't even have to move off their spot to guard our TWO speedy receiving Tight Ends. It's fucking unfathomable that there wasn't a better way to attack them than that.

Also, if not him, who would you guys suggest we put in instead? What part of this mystery superstar's resume would be better than Bevell's?

I'm not going to jump on Linkedin and start shuffling resumes, that's Pete's job. This is a bad argument that was made early in the Mariners' season on behalf of Fernando Rodney. "He's still getting saves, don't worry about his numbers, who would you put in instead huh?". It's a great way to blow a season, wasting resources trying to work around problems rather than fixing them sooner.

This is a problem that needs addressed.
