Honestly, if I had to take a guess.
A lot of the Tumblr outrage culture...okay. I'm not talking about reasonable people discussing issues of actual social importance who happen to be on Tumblr. And yes, they do exist. No, what I'm talking about is the people who seem to exist as a mockery of actual social issues. The ones that talk about being triggered because their mom refused to acknowledge their squirrel-emulating diet. All while helping to make it harder to get LGBT issues heard by turning them into bad jokes.
That particular bit of outrage culture seems to generally be one of two groups:
And then they use words like "rape", which is a real problem, to discuss an altering of video game files to resemble something which in no way shape or form resembles atual rape, and I just want to smack my head against a wall.
Anyway, Group #2 quite frequently wasn't even old enough to play Dragon Age 1 when it was still popular. Think about it...Dragon Age 1 was released in 2009. That means a 15-16 year old now was 9 or 10 when it came out. Now, could they have caught up, of course. But these days no one's talking about a mod for a 6 year old game.
There's likely also a scattering of, as you said, straight male gamers who for some reason can't handle a world with entertainment that isn't solely focused no them. I still remember the "BETRAYED" post regarding...I think it was Dragon Age 2? Where someone posted a long screed on how Bioware had betrayed/abandoned the Straight Male Gamer by giving options to other people as well. I also remember the smackdown given by one of the Bioware writers to that sort of nonsense. There's probably some peeps who never got over their unjustified rage over that incident.
