Big push for a 40-hour work week in South Africa

" Cosatu added that these changes should be made without workers losing their wages and that it planned to use protest action to put more pressure on the government and employers to move towards their implementation. "

This seems to be a commonly accepted practice in the country nowadays. Don't like something? Let's protest about it. This kind of thing seems to be happening almost every week and it has consequences for the economy. If people work fewer hours, they earn less. This is a fundamental law of a free market economy. People don't understand that you can't work less and earn more, that is not how an economy works. If the 40 hour work week is passed and more jobs are created, businesses are going to cut salaries to account for the loss of production. You simply cannot have both, it is one or the other. Cosatu's protests against this idea will damage economic activity in the country and will result in nothing being accomplished.
