Bill Gates is funding factories for 7 potential coronavirus vaccines

You're absolutely correct.

But I don't think belief in conspiracy theories is based on rational thought - as much they like to claim they're "free and independent thinkers" and similar bunk you hear from them.

Here's why (and that just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt):

We like to have neat, orderly world. This thing goes into this box, 1 + 1 = 2, we should follow X, Y, Z rules and nothing bad will ever happen to us. It's understandable, it's what helps us get out of the bed in the morning.

Unfortunately world doesn't give a flying fuck about how neat we want it to be. One of the things complex problems like coronavirus are good at, is that they blatantly expose is just how big communal delusion this "neat orderly world" really is.

The rule book suddenly has to be thrown out of the window. Our entire routines and daily orders are falling apart. Leaders look like they're really don't have much of an idea what they're doing. To top it off, even the goddamn experts can't provide simple consistent answers.

And people are not stupid. They know something is going on. They know it will have consequences and that they will probably be affected too. This makes people anxious. I'm sure you'll have a hard time finding even that most hard, ardent stoic on this subreddit who isn't even a bit worried about the future.

And normally, people have questions. What is going on? How will this affect me? What can I do to stop all of this madness and just go back to neat, orderly world I'm so used to? What guarantees do I have that what you're saying will work and I'll be OK?

Those are not questions coming out of thirst for knowledge. Those are question a fearful person would ask.

The problem is, that for many complex problems - such as coronavirus - the simple answers to these questions either don't exists or come with no guarantees. All we have a this point is bunch of complex solutions that give no guarantees for the future - the exact thing people are most interested in.

But when you're scared you don't care about complex problems much less about complex solutions. You don't care about being right or wrong. Only thing you care about is what you can do, right now, to get rid of this fear - the simpler, the better.

And what do you do, when conspiracy theorist tells you - scared shitless - that the problem is not a chaotic world throwing another fist of shit at us, but it was really them? That blaming and getting rid of them will make all of our problems go away and we can all go back to our neat orderly world, we're so used to?

You belive him.

After all, things (especially scary) don't "just happen", do they?

This quarantine really gave me too much time - instead of using it to do something productive, I'm posting novels on reddit. Yay.
