Bill Watterson was ahead of his time.

I'm not brave enough to express this sentiment on my own in the face of reddit single mindedness and it's devastating arsenal of downvotes, but I'm glad someone said it.

Or does it only apply to every single person except Kim Davis?

I think people are forgetting that the same courts have made decisions which uphold criminalization of sodomy (Bowers v. Hardwick 478 U.S. 186 (1986)). In this, the US Supreme Court says it is not unconstitutional for states to criminalize certain sexual acts collectively often called "sodomy". Many states had such laws.

And then these laws were overturned in 2003.

The rapid change from "sodomy being illegal in almost all US locations and this being supported by the US Supreme Court", to "homosexual unions must be recognized by the state by all states because the US Supreme Court said so" does not allow for such rapid changes in individuals.

The overwhelming history of the USA, a large portion of the population (see: California Proposition 8 in 2008), and many religions make such homosexual acts unambiguously condemned. The fact that a significant part of the population is rather apathetic and a minority is strongly in favour of such things does not mean that individuals can or should be expected to comply.

It is something they think is immoral and they stand up for it.

This is good. We want people to stand up for what they honestly think is good.

Applying the US Constitution's protections so broadly and inconsistently weakens it more than it already is.

Maybe it is planned to pervert the US Constitution to allow for rampant warrentless searches and seizures (NSA, civil forfeiture, etc), and yet somehow make homosexual unions equal to marriage which have to be recognized by all states.
