NIH/NSF grants have been a huge driver of technological innovation in the US and those are taxpayer funded. In fact, I would argue that if you eliminated this and relied strictly on private funding there would be a huge drop off in technological progress in areas where the avenue to profitability is not clear, like certain math doctrines.

No but I do think we should force corporations to pay dividends under some circumstances. What Apple is doing with their excess cash for example is outrageous and I think they have an ethical obligation to their shareholders to pay dividends. And naturally those dividends would be taxed.
