The gates foundation has done tremendous good in combatting infection diseases and providing clean drinking water to those who previously didn't have access. This has a tremendous global impact and requires money. Some of the folks who have pledged millions to the notre Dame cathedral repair have done very little in terms of addressing global health concerns. It's their money and they're welcome to do as they want. However, it's my opinion that it's odd that they're willing to spend millions on fixing a cathedral and not on research towards, for instance, eradicating malaria and tb. These are just examples, but there are plenty of things that plague the world that are only solvable through research and money. I believe rocknroalds point was that there is a lot of global suffering that can be alleviated through donations. He's not claiming "throwing money at it" immediately solves anything but it certainly requires a lot of money to make a change. Again, people can donate their money wherever they feel fit, or not donate it at all. That didn't mean rocknroalds can't be disappointed with what causes lead to immediate outpouring of money and those that don't
