BJJ School recommendations for Montreal Island and Laval

BTT - Haven't been here in years but they're the best gi competition guys on the island IMO. Fabio is a bit rough around the edges but the yelling he does is how he shows you he cares.

H2O - Best bang for your buck. Lots of mat time too if you're already experienced. Richard Ho is one of the nicest dudes in the scene which is saying a lot since he's made it to the UFC. He has no reason to be as down to earth as he is. Really cool dude.

Tristar - Best no-gi. Surprisingly cheap for such a famous gym. I no longer live in Montreal but anywhere I go in Canada, I'm always two degrees from Firas. So many of his guys end up settling elsewhere. You said you wanted wrestling, this is by far the best place to do it on the island that isn't a pure wrestling school.

Team #One. - Luciano Ucci is a very famous name in the Montreal scene. Never rolled with him unfortunately but I've heard very good things about him as a person. I respect him a lot for all he's done to spread BJJ in Quebec and Montreal. Worth a visit based on my second hand knowledge of him as a person but I can't tell you much about his style of teaching.

Brigade - Never heard of it.

Carlson Gracie - Tri Nguyen is a great dude. His jiu jitsu is very refined in both gi and no gi. I've never taken a class under him so I can't vouch for his style but I've been drinking with him, he's a stand up guy. Will have to drop in when I'm in town.

Gracie Barra - I pretty much know the entire team. West Island is the best competition gym among the GB schools. Lots of really athletic young gus there. In Laval, David Guigui is one of the OGs of the Montreal scene. Dude is so OG, he was fighting MMA back when it was called NHB (No Hold's Barred). There are some old YouTube videos of his fights from the fucking 90's. Great, great dude. The downtown school which is the HQ is a very welcoming environment. Bruno IMO is the best gi guy on the island. Has a really unique game too. I've legitimately have never seen him been tapped except by Braulio Estima and Dracaulino and I've known him for over 10 years. However, I dunno how available Bruno is these days now that he's a dad and is expanding his business.

10th Planet - Louis Ho is nice but the gem of that school IMO is Corey. He loves jiu jitsu and puts so much time and effort into teaching. Once saw him in a sub only no time limit match. He had a match go an hour. Dude is one of the hidden games in the city.

Frontenac - Dunno.

Sherbatov - Dunno.

Titans - Never heard of it.

Revolution - It's up in the plateau. Lotta good guys here. For a long time they were the only option in the plateau.

If you want judo, I just suggest you go to Shidokan twice a week. Shidokan is very cheap and you should be able to fit it into your budget if you do BJJ as well. I wouldn't say any of those schools I listed are great at teaching judo. Sensei Nakamura added Kosen Judo sessions because he knows a lot of the guys there cross train.
