Black Desert Online Creators Pearl Abyss to Acquire CCP Games

I don't know if I'd sweat it too much. When they say,

The deal outlines that CCP Games will continue to operate independently

I think you can believe that. I think you can believe what they said about wanting some of CCP's expertise as well.

From PA's side, CCP is profitable, debt gone and sitting on $40m right now, and so the acquisition is 'simple' as far as that goes. They did pay a pretty penny though and so they see something else of value there. It could be that they think they can monetize Eve better than CCP did but I seriously doubt that. Nobody knows their own playerbase better than the developer that created them. And with CCPs position of late, they don't need outside investment to do something new if they've got their own ideas.

No, rather, I do think it is PA wanting some of that 'Western' expertise in marketing a game to the rest of the world. Asia has a bunch of gaming companies, a thriving gaming culture and makes tons of games that do zip outside of Asia compared to how they do in their own market and compared to how Western companies do outside of Asia.

Given the price CCP got, the relative sizes of the two organizations, and the substance of the press release (they don't just straight lie in those, PA is publicly traded and investors read that stuff) I think you can take a lot of it at face value.

There was a similar, kinda opposite, deal between Tencent, the Chinese gaming behemoth, and GGG, makers of PoE. Rather than Tencent needing help outside, they saw that GGG could never be as good inside China as they could. They acquired GGG for $100m down, the rest to be due later, just so they could do PoE inside China right. They don't even care how PoE does it in the whole rest of the world. China is such a huge and growing market for games that acquiring a Western game and ignoring the West is still a profitable decision. GGG makes PoE for the rest of the world, Tencent punches up the graphics and changes the rules a bit just for their Chinese audience and they both make more.

I think what you can expect is that some of CCPs staff are going to be spending some time in Korea or Shanghai over the coming years and that PA is soon going to drop a new game that is extensively marketed all around the world and that they expect both Asia and the West to play together.
