Black Panther marks the "ultimate failure of Gamergate" - A Twitter Thread by Alexandra Erin‏

Things gamergate railed on in regards to PoC characters in media:

  • Tokenism/shoehorned diversity/box ticking quotas
  • Racebending existing characters in the name meeting the aforementioned quota

Black Panther does neither of these things.

It's the ultimate failure of Gamer Gate, the Sad Puppies, and all the little splinter groups and hate campaigns of the cultural alt-right. They won a lot of battles, hurt a lot of people, tanked a couple of movies and games

No. Absolutely fucking wrong. Ghostbusters and Sunset didn't tank because they had black people in them, they tanked because they were shit. The alt-right and gamergate had nothing to do with it.

The math has been that if everybody else will show up for the stuff that panders to the straight white dudes, but the straight white dudes won't show up for anyone else, then the smart money was on pandering to the straight white dudes.

You can't simultaneously hold the positions that white people have all the money and smart money isn't generally on making products targetting white people. It's one or the other.

And the fact is that the math was probably not actually that convincing for a long time.

Oh, so now we conceed that yes, the argument that it's not as statistically reliable an investment was a legitimate argument?

But it's not the first time a Black-directed, Black-led movie has outperformed even positive expectations in recent memory

And now we even acknowledge that this has has happened repeatedly over the last 20 years. AMAZING! So tell me, then, why was it so fucking important to screech about this particular movie now?

I never wished failure on Black Panther. I haven't heard of any gamergate or alt-right boycott against it either. Black Panther doesn't commit the forced diversity sins I've complained about over the last few years.

My only complaint about Black Panther is that he shares his name with an ethnonationalist communist party. It's like a having white British superhero being called "EDL man".

Other than that small fact, I find him completely benign and, honestly, kind of cool.

I'd still rather watch Blade, though, because Wesley Snipes.
